v0.17 - Anniversary Update

Hey all, Perrito here~!

By now I'm sure you're all well aware of the event coming up, but in case you didn't read the name of this update, MG2 will be celebrating its first anniversary on October 4th! It's hard to believe we launched a year ago; so much has happened this year but honestly it all feels like a blur. Before I get into the update, I want to touch on what it's been like working on the game!

Even back in the day, I always wanted to recapture some of the magic that came with experiencing this game for the first time. For many of us, MG2 is the latest in a long list of projects that we've worked on. I was lucky to have met Chika and Anthony back in 2010 during Erwin's first test of what would end up becoming MG2. I teamed up with them to help with their project and from there we spent years trying out different versions. Initially our goal was simple: to create a server utilizing the mystique of the game's oldest versions, but as we learned more about the game and honed our skills, we decided to take it a step further and make something entirely unique. Experimenting led us down a winding path, and while our previous work never saw the light of day, we brought much of what we learned to the table when we eventually teamed up with Erwin again in 2017. Creating a nostalgic experience was always the plan, but nostalgia is subjective and what we considered nostalgic back in 2010 is totally different from what we're nostalgic for now.

Working on MG taught us a lot about managing a server and (hopefully) we've been able to employ some of that knowledge while working on MG2. This project has been a great creative outlet for me, and having something to do while I'm not at work has kept me sane amidst ongoing real-world events. But I still have a lot to learn. Following in the footsteps of the official game hasn't been as straightforward as you might think. Of course there are client limitations, but there are also intricacies and controversial changes that, while faithful to the original game, have widespread effects on the game's balance. And when it comes to adding our own flare or custom content, there are always mixed reactions. The fact of the matter is: you won't always be able to please everyone, but that's okay. At the end of the day, we are making the kind of game we'd like to play ourselves and doing what feels right.

OK, I'll stop myself from reminiscing too much, let's talk about this update! In short, it's an anniversary celebration with new event monsters, quests, and items to collect! And on the technical side, we are fixing a ton of stuff in our backlog. We'll also be running events all week long, so be sure to keep an eye out for event information posted in the Discord and in-game! From the MG2 team and myself, we hope you all enjoy the MG2 Anniversary event. Here's to another great year~!
